Haikou, China is a city in the South of China that has a sub-tropical climate. It has been an early eco-stand out since 1995 when the city implemented a 10 point rating system that ranged from community health centers and environmentally friendly building, to waste recycling and green belts. This multi-prong approach worked, and as of 2012 it had the second best air supply in China. An impressive 163 model eco-villages have also been constructed that are home to over 200,000 people. The benefits went beyond air quality, and have increased the overall life expectancy in the city to 78 years old.
