Goals and Projects to Motivate Student Achievement

Goal: Improve reading comprehension and vocabulary related to a topic of interest. Project: Create an Interest-Based Resource Book. Students choose a topic they’re passionate about (sports, music, history, etc.). They find and compile articles, websites, or short stories related to their topic. As they read, they highlight new vocabulary, look up meanings, write summaries, and create a personal glossary within their resource book. They can discuss their findings with classmates, deepening both their vocabulary and knowledge of the topic.

Goal: Master basic conversational structures and daily life vocabulary. Project: Design a Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt. Students create a list of common places in their neighborhood (store, park, etc.) and actions related to errands (“buy groceries,” “mail a letter”). In pairs, they take turns giving each other directions and “completing” the tasks by finding pictures of the places or miming the actions. Afterwards, students can share their “adventures,” fostering fluency and practical vocabulary.

Goal: Build confidence in speaking and informal pronunciation. Project: Become Podcast Hosts. Students pick a theme for their podcast (book reviews, local news, funny stories). They write a short script, practice, and then record themselves using a simple voice recorder app. Hearing their own voices builds awareness of pronunciation and fluency, while the creative aspect boosts engagement.

Goal: Enhance grammatical accuracy in written communication. Project: Collaborative Story and Editing Rounds. Students start a chain story, each contributing a few sentences. After several rounds, the story is displayed for the class to proofread together. They identify grammar errors, suggest improvements, and discuss common writing pitfalls, making grammar practice contextual and engaging.
