Lesson Plan: Introduction to English for Beginners

Title: Let’s Play and Learn English!

Age Group: 6-8 years old

Level: Beginner ESL learners

Objectives:

  • Introduce basic English vocabulary and phrases in a playful way.
  • Build confidence in using English through fun activities.
  • Spark excitement about learning English.

Materials Needed:

  • Flashcards with images (e.g., animals, colors, shapes, everyday objects, actions)
  • Whiteboard and colorful markers
  • Simple worksheets with exercises (e.g., matching, tracing, coloring)
  • Storybook with bright illustrations, simple sentences, and a catchy element (rhyme or repetition)
  • Audio recordings of vocabulary, phrases, and a short song related to the theme
  • Small prizes/stickers for participation

Duration: 60 minutes

Lesson Plan:

Welcome and Warm-Up (10 minutes):

  • Greet with Enthusiasm: Welcome students with a big smile and energetic “Hello, everyone!” Use a puppet or stuffed animal to introduce yourself if you’d like.
  • Name Game: Sing a simple ‘Hello’ song where students replace their names (Find one on YouTube or create your own!).
  • Action Charades: Act out simple actions (jumping, laughing, sleeping) for students to guess.

Vocabulary Time (15 minutes):

  • Mystery Box: Hide flashcards in a box. Have students take turns picking one and saying the word. For an extra challenge, have them act it out while classmates guess.
  • Vocabulary Chant: Create a short, catchy chant using the words, adding motions (Example: “Apple, apple, red and round, apple, apple, on the ground!”).
  • Drawing Relay: Divide students into teams. Whisper a word to the first student in line and have them draw it while their team guesses.

Let’s Listen and Sing! (15 minutes):

  • Sound Hunt: Play the audio recordings, asking students to point to the matching flashcard or perform an action when they hear a word (stand up for “dog,” hop for “jump”).
  • Song Time: Choose a short, upbeat song based on the theme (colors, animals, etc.). Play it twice, and encourage students to sing along and act out the words if possible.

Reading, Writing, and a Story! (15 minutes):

  • Word Trace: Write vocabulary words on the board in large, dotted letters for students to trace with their fingers.
  • Picture Match-Up: Provide worksheets with pictures and simple words to match or color based on instructions.
  • Story Time!: Pick a fun storybook and show the pictures as you read with animated voices. Pause to ask simple questions about what they see.

Wrap-up with a Smile (5 minutes):

  • Sticker Chart: Have a large chart with students’ names. Give them a sticker each time they participate or say a word correctly.
  • “I can say…” Game: Go around the circle, having each student say “I can say…” followed by a vocabulary word they learned.
  • Goodbye Song: Sing a goodbye song incorporating a few of the day’s vocabulary words.

Extension Activities (optional):

  • Craft projects that reinforce the lesson’s theme.
  • Online English learning games for more practice.

Tips:

  • Use lots of visuals, gestures, and varied intonations to keep kids engaged.
  • Reward participation frequently with praise and small stickers.
  • Keep activities short and switch between them to maintain focus.
  • Make it fun! Your enthusiasm will be contagious.
