ESL Lesson Plan: Practicing Interviews in the Classroom

Objective: To assist students in practicing interview skills, including answering common interview questions, expressing themselves confidently, and using appropriate language and body language in a professional setting.

Level: Intermediate to Advanced ESL learners.

Duration: 60 minutes.

Materials:

  • List of common interview questions (printed handouts or displayed digitally).
  • Whiteboard or flip chart.
  • Markers.
  • Recording device (optional).

Procedure:

1. Introduction (5 minutes):

  • Greet the students and explain the objective of the lesson: to practice interview skills.
  • Discuss the importance of interview skills in professional settings and how practicing can help build confidence and improve performance.

2. Warm-up Activity (10 minutes):

  • Engage students in a brief discussion about their experiences with job interviews. Encourage them to share any memorable moments, challenges faced, or successful strategies used.
  • Brainstorm common interview questions as a class and write them on the board.

3. Presentation of Interview Questions (10 minutes):

  • Distribute the list of common interview questions to students or display them on the board.
  • Go through each question, explaining their meanings and discussing possible responses. Model appropriate language and encourage students to take notes.

4. Pair Work: Mock Interviews (25 minutes):

  • Divide the class into pairs. Assign one student as the interviewer and the other as the interviewee.
  • Provide each pair with a set of interview questions and instruct them to take turns conducting mock interviews.
  • Encourage interviewees to practice answering questions using the language and strategies discussed earlier.
  • Circulate among pairs, providing guidance, feedback, and assistance as needed.

5. Feedback and Reflection (10 minutes):

  • Bring the class back together and facilitate a discussion on the mock interviews.
  • Encourage students to share their experiences, challenges faced, and areas for improvement.
  • Provide constructive feedback on language use, communication skills, and overall performance.
  • Discuss strategies for improving interview skills, such as practicing responses, researching the company, and developing confidence.

6. Conclusion and Homework (5 minutes):

  • Summarize the key points of the lesson and emphasize the importance of continuous practice.
  • Assign homework tasks, such as researching interview tips online, practicing responses to additional interview questions, or recording a mock interview at home for self-assessment.
  • Thank the students for their participation and effort.

Example of Implementation: In a classroom setting, students are paired up and provided with a list of common interview questions. They take turns playing the roles of interviewer and interviewee, conducting mock interviews with each other. For example:

Interviewer: “Can you tell me about yourself?” Interviewee: “Sure. My name is Maria, and I recently graduated from university with a degree in business administration. During my studies, I completed internships at two different companies, where I gained experience in marketing and project management.”

The teacher circulates among pairs, providing support and feedback as needed. After the activity, the class reconvenes for a discussion on the mock interviews, where students reflect on their experiences and receive constructive feedback from the teacher and their peers. Finally, students are assigned homework tasks to further practice their interview skills outside of class.
