Age Level: Elementary School (6-8 years old) Ability Level: Beginner Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to introduce themselves and describe simple everyday actions.
Warm-up (5 minutes): Action Charades!
- Materials: Slips of paper with simple actions written on them (jump, clap, smile, wave)
- Let’s Act it Out: Students take turns picking a slip, acting out the action, and having the class guess.
- Why it Works: It’s silly, gets them moving, and introduces action words in a memorable way.
Review (10 minutes): Picture Power
- Flashcards: Use BIG, colorful flashcards with items they know: family members (mom, dad), animals (cat, dog), objects (ball, book).
- Show and Tell: Hold up a flashcard and say the word clearly. Have the whole class repeat after you.
- Make it a Game: Hold up a card, and the first student to say the word correctly gets a point or sticker!
Presentation of New Material (15 minutes): It’s All About Me!
- Big Board Demo: Write “My name is…” and “I am … years old” on the board. Fill in your own information as an example.
- Picture Support: Underneath, draw simple stick figures doing actions like eating, sleeping, playing.
- Let’s Practice: Point to each sentence, say the words clearly, and have the whole class repeat together. Then, ask individual students to try on their own.
Pronunciation (5 minutes): Action Word Focus
- Pick 3 Key Verbs: Choose from the actions you introduced (eat, sleep, run, etc.).
- Slow & Clear: Say each word slowly, exaggerating the sounds. Students repeat after you, like an echo.
- Add Some Motion: Do the action as you say the verb, students mirror you (helps with memory!)
Vocabulary and Actions (10 minutes): It’s a Match!
- Prep: Big flashcards – half with action pictures, half with the words (written clearly).
- Memory-Style: Lay flashcards face down in a grid. Students take turns flipping 2, trying to find a picture-word match.
- Say it Out Loud: When they get a match, they practice saying the full sentence “I can sleep!”
Closing (5 minutes): Story Time Circle
- Let’s Get Creative: Sit in a circle. You start with “My name is [your name], and I like to eat.”
- Round and Round: Each student then adds a sentence about themselves. It can be true or silly! (“My name is Anna and I like to fly!”)
