The Romance of the Imilchil Marriage Festival

The Imilchil Marriage Festival is an incredibly romantic event which takes place in September in Morocco in the Atlas Mountains. The festival is sometimes known as the September Romance and is an annual collective marriage where women of the Aït Sokham and Aït Bouguemmaz tribes choose their husbands. Nearly 30,000 people gather under tents for three days with their flocks, their horses and camels to celebrate, dress up, and dance for hours. A nod and a wink indicates interest and letting go of a hand signals rejection. Find out more about this festival here and here.
