Kanamara Matsuri Festival in Japan

Quite the Spectacle! The Kanamara Matsuri Festival in Japan!

The Kanamara Matsuri Festival (Festival of the Steel Phallus) takes place April 1st, which is known for laughs and fooling folks. This celebration is also an educational event, as it aims to protect people from sexually transmitted diseases. The festival dates back to the 1600s where local entertainers met at a shrine in Kawasaki to pray for protection. Each year people continue the tradition, and the day before the festival begins everyone eats yin and yang shaped rice treats. At sunrise a bonfire is followed by a ceremony where dried sardines and sake (rice wine) are consumed for good luck. Learn more about the Kanamara Matsuri Festival in Japan.
