The Kanamara Matsuri Festival takes place April 1st, which is known for laughs and fooling folks. The Kanamara Matsuri Festival is one of the most unbelievable festivals and is aimed at protecting people from STDs. The festival dates back to the 1600s where local prostitutes met at the Kanamara Shinto shrine in Kawasaki and pray for protection. This is the place of this festival and each year people pray to it for the same protection. The day before the festival begins everyone eats rice treats in the shape of the yin and yang. The next morning they attend a bonfire followed by the Shinto ceremony where dried sardines and sake are consumed for good luck. There is a grand parade unlike none you’ve seen that takes place!
