Using Humor to Engage Learners, American #TESOL Webinar

Humor, when used effectively, helps enhance the classroom atmosphere and improves student learning. Humor helps students relieve stress. Learning a new language is quite stressful and if the mind shuts down then students can’t process new learning. However, if students laugh or smile then their brains open up to new learning. They relax mentally and physically. They also can feel more comfortable making mistakes. Sarcasm should be avoided, especially with younger language learners. It’s also important to discuss what is acceptable humor in the classroom.
