Switzerland is famous for delicious chocolate, and Geneva’s most divine festival, L’Escalade, takes place annually. This festival commemorates the Genevan’s victory over the Duke of Savoy’s surprise attack on December 11, 1602. Catherine Cheynel was cooking soup when she noticed soldiers climbing Geneva’s wall. She poured a large cauldron of soup on the soldiers, which awoke the residents and the militia who successfully defended the city. People at the festival celebrate by consuming a cauldron of chocolate stuffed with marzipan candles. Learn more about attending the L’Escalade in Switzerland.
