One of the reasons that so many Americans like to teach in Thailand is because the structure of the schools is very similar to the American school systems. The youth start attending school at the pre-school level and go all the way through sr. high. Although students are only required to attend nine years worth of school, most stay enrolled for all twelve years.
One of the reasons that so many Americans are taking advantage of opportunities to teach in Thailand is because the country has put a great deal of effort into incorporating the use of the English language into their curriculum. All of the core classes that students are required to take in Thailand are generally taught in English, which makes it very easy for the schools to incorporate American teachers into their programs. Since the turn of the century there has been a noticeable increase in the number of American teachers who have decided to try to teach in Thailand instead of first applying for jobs in their home country.
Before you start to scan the work boards in search of a job that would let you earn a living while teaching in Thailand, there are some things you are going to need to get taken care of first. Thailand has some pretty strict restrictions about the Americans they will allow to teach in Thailand. In addition to making sure that you have all the necessary visas that permit you to accept work in Thailand, you are going to have to work with the American TESOL to make sure that you are properly certified. To gain a working visa to teach in Thailand you will also need a bachelors degree from an accredited Institution.
A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.
The Kingdom of Thailand lies in Southeast Asia, with Laos and Cambodia to its east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to its south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar to its west. Its largest city is Bangkok, which is also one of the largest cities in the world. This is not the capitol as commonly accepted though. The actual capitol is the longest multi-word place name in the world. Spelled in English is Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit. The name roughly translates as "Great City of Angels, the supreme repository of divine jewels, the great land of unconquerable, the grand and prominent realm, the royal and delightful capitol full of nine noble gems, the highest royal dwelling and grand palace, the divine shelter and living place of the reincarnated spirits" wheras Bangkok translates as "Village of Olives" or "Village of Plums"
