The Republic of the Congo, situated in Central Africa, is a geographically diverse country. Its terrain varies from coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean to the Mayombé mountains in the southwest. The Niari valley, a significant depression, acts as a pathway between the interior and the coast. Further inland, a series of plateaus dominate the landscape, dissected by the deeply eroded valleys of the Congo River's tributaries. Around 70% of the country is covered in lush rainforests, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife, including gorillas.
