Réunion, a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean, is dominated by two massive shield volcanoes. Piton des Neiges, a dormant volcano, stands as the highest point, while Piton de la Fournaise, an active volcano, continues to shape the island's landscape with frequent eruptions. The interior is rugged, with deep ravines, cirques, and waterfalls cascading down the slopes. A narrow coastal plain encircles the island, offering fertile land for agriculture and settlements. Réunion's unique topography, combined with its tropical climate, creates a diverse range of microclimates and ecosystems, from lush rainforests to dry savannas. The coastline is mostly composed of cliffs and rocky shores, interspersed with some black sand beaches.
